Let's talk about movies
So, summer is winding down and I really only feel like talking about movies in today's posting.
The Friday estimates were just released and the news is looking bad for "The Nanny Diaries." Estimates of $2.6MM (www.leesmovieinfo.net) and a 2.5x weekend multiplier suggest this will make about $6-7MM this weekend. Due to the overwhelmingly negative reviews (http://www.slate.com/id/2172698/nav/tap3/), it's safe to assume the word-of-mouth will start hurting this film's attendance before the weekend is even over.
"Superbad" seems to be doing well for itself. It looks likely to experience a slightly sharper 2nd weekend decline than "Knocked Up," which appealed to a broader audience. My guess is that "Superbad" will ultimately cross the $100MM mark (it's already halfway there and it's only been out for a week), and possibly make it to $110MM or so, but not much further if steep weekday declines continue. A total weekend of around $16MM looks likely.
Finally, I'd like to mention "Stardust," a personal favorite of mine. Its current Friday-to-Friday decline looks to be about 28%. I'm guessing this one will end its run with $28MM domestically. This is one of those movies that just never found its audience, much like "Children of Men" last year.
